"Transformative Power of Children" Film Series:
Rabbit-Proof Fence
Noyce's film is based on a true story and presents a very dark period in Australia's history. In 1931 Aborigine half-castes (the "Stolen Generation") were forcibly taken from their families and raised miles away to become domestic servants or forced to marry a white person. The film traces three girls who escape from their forced confinement in an orphanage and attempt to travel 1200 miles on foot to return to their families. This film is memorable! (Phillip Noyce, Australia, 2002)

Truffaut's celebrated ability to capture children who appear to be oblivious to the presence of the camera is very much in evidence in this warm, loving, cinematic tribute to children.
